Memphis Botanic Garden Blooming with Japanese Culture

March events at the Memphis Botanic Garden (750 Cherry Road, Memphis, TN 38117; 901-682-6188) offer a taste of Spring from Japan, thanks to a March 19th 'Gyogi' workshop on Japanese etiquette and communication and a special 'Cherry Blossom Viewing' event on March 29th. Both happenings benefit from the expert direction of Sachiko Matsushita, PhD, Japan Outreach Coordinator at the University of Memphis.

The "Gyogi" workshop, from 7:00-9:30 p.m., promises help for travelers, business people and general culture enthusiasts who wish to learn more about the 'do's and dont's' in Japanese social interactions. Expectations are high that many of the time-tested customs and manners inherent in Japanese culture will translate into daily dealings in every cultural context! At the Sunday (March 29th) ?Cherry Blossom Viewing?, participants will learn to prepare traditional unrolled sushi - or 'Chirashi-zushi' - and take part in Japanese cultural hands-on activities, such as writing Japanese calligraphy on a fan, making a bookmark with an origami crane and playing with Japanese traditional toys. A corner of the celebration will also be dedicated to reading 'Under the Cherry Blossoms' from the famous The Tale of Genji . All events will take place from noon until 2:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person to cover the cost of craft supplies.
